While Ipswich Cup Day in Queensland seems to be the race meet on everyone’s lips this weekend there is actually a Group race feature running in Western Australia with Belmont Park to host the Hyperion Stakes 2013 – betting tips and exotic selections for which are detailed below.
One of the key winter races on the Perth racing program, Saturday’s $125,000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1600m) features a 16-horse field boasting all the state’s major players.
Dominating the latest Hyperion Stakes betting markets at bookmaker.com.au at a quote of $3.70 is the Grant Williams-trained Ranger.
Coming off two nice runs this prep the Testa Rossa six-year-old looks set to strike third-up as they go up to the mile.
They will also appreciate barrier three after their close third to fellow Hyperion hopeful Kerrific in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint (1400m) last start where they had gate 10 to overcome.
The other shorties in the mix coming via almost identical lead-ups include dual Group 1 winner Playing God ($6), Belmont Sprint winner Kerrific ($6.50) who needs to handle the weight-for-age conditions on Saturday and early market mover Kincaple ($7.50).
To help you clean out the bookies this weekend we’ve gone over the entire Hyperion Stakes field and form, not just that of the top fancies, and come up with our selections on the feature.
#3 Ranger ($3.70)
Sticking with the favourite here as we think the third-up over the 1600m under weight-for-age will all work to their advantage. Has a lengthy losing streak to break but looks set to do so here. Had gate 10 for their last start third in the Belmont Sprint but come into three for this. Also carried 58.5kg then to the winner’s 55.5kg but both have 59kg for the rematch. Has class, interstate form and are deserved favourite.
#15 Moonlight Bay ($15)
Bit of a roughie pick to surprise with a second place finish here. Stablemate to the favourite also prepared by Grant Williams and fancy this Catbird mare to follow Ranger through the field and finish off strongly. Are super consistent having run top four in all six of their 2013 starts including their Listed Pinjarra Cup (2300m) victory and their second to Black Tycoon in the Geraldton Cup carrying a big weight. She was a first-up fourth in the Belmont Sprint and will like the extra distance here.
#1 Playing God ($6)
Cannot deny the class of Neville Parnham’s Blackfriars five-year-old. Has twice won over better fields at elite level and comes via the Roma Cup (3rd) and Belmont Sprint (5th) which look the form races for this. Belmont Sprint run was brave as they had 60kg, Kerrfic carried just 55.5kg to victory, and so back at WFA will improve.
