2013 Gai Waterhouse Classic Betting Tips

The Queensland Winter Carnival action heads west of Brisbane this weekend for the always exciting Ipswich Cup day and one of the better races on the program is the Listed 2013 Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m).

The race is often used for those horses who didn’t quite make the cut in some of the bigger carnival races or can be a last ditch effort to qualify for the following week’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara.

Restricted to fillies and mares, this year a capacity 16-horse field will line up and current favourite is Patinack’s in-form filly Peron at $3.50.

Also well fancied in betting are Darley-owned mare Classics ($5.50), John O’Shea’s talented mare Bound To Blush ($6) and Victorian filly Love For Ransom ($9).

The Winner

#11 Peron $3.50

First trip to Ipswich which is a slight concern as the tight track can prove tricky to navigate and luck does come into play. But this filly certainly looks the class horse on the rise and is only racing here with a view to picking up enough prizemoney to ensure a start in next weekend’s Group 1. She’s five from six for her career and has beaten the older horses in two starts this prep. Was surprised to see her open as high as $6 in some markets, though that was quickly snapped up. Drawn well in barrier six which is crucial at Ipswich and gets in on the minimum.

#16 Love For Ransom $9

Her first-up ninth isn’t flattering in the form guide but she received absolutely no luck in running. Granted, she is a filly that needs luck but she’s got the talent to feature here. Showed that when she produced a huge win at Moonee Valley in the spring which had her talked about among the Thousand Guineas fancies.

#8 Hidden Kisses $26

Hidden Kisses could be the one over the odds in this race. From the stable of Queensland’s leading trainer Robert Heathcote, a generally consistent mare who is a three-time winner at the distance. Will appreciate a slight drop in grade from the Glenlogan Park Stakes and well drawn in barrier eight.
