Pride’s 2013 Grafton Cup Destiny

A 2000m feature at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday will give the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss the opportunity to prove their Grafton Cup 2013 potential.

The Power Of Destiny four-year-old runs in the $85,000 Listed Sydney Banana Wholesalers Handicap (2000m) for which the gelding is the $3.80 favourite for at ahead of the likes of the Bjorn Baker-trained Cantonese ($5.50) who could also be Grafton Cup bound, Merlin Mustang ($6.50) and German import Illo ($8).

Destiny’s Kiss earned their favourite status for this weekend following their good second behind World Wide over the Randwick mile last Saturday where they overcame barrier 14 of 15 to finish strongly in the 1600m showdown.

Formerly prepared by Robert Smerdon in Melbourne the now Sydney-based galloper hasn’t won a race since a 2013m event at Mornignton last September during their career peak which saw them take out five of their six starts between August 1 and September 29, three of those victories being on Heavy ground.

They get back up to the trip this weekend and are racing for a shot at the $150,000 Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 11, Pride confident Destiny’s Kiss’s time to return to the winners’ stall has come.

“He’s finally out to his right distance and it looks a nice race for him, it really does,” Pride said of Saturday’s race.

“Every run for me has been terrific and hopefully this will be his day.

“He needs to win in open company before we start considering races like that (Grafton Cup) so Saturday would be a good starting point.

“Certainly it is a bit of a crossroads race for him.”

Further boosting Pride’s confidence was the likelihood of a soft track at Rosehill, the proven mudlark set to thrive on ground expected to cop more rain on Friday after a mid-week downpour.

“There has been enough rain already for him to be effective but if we get more it’s not going to hurt either,” Pride said.
