Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
John Thompson’s flying young Husson filly Peron has opened clear favourite to take out their sixth turf trophy from seven career starts dominating the 2013 Gai Waterhouse Classic odds for the Ipswich Cup Day classic this Saturday.
The Husson three-year-old has suffered just one defeat, a third at Doomben when seeing the mile for the first time in February, and looks on track to continue her fine form in the $100,000 Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m).
Peron has won both of her starts this time in firstly at the Gold Coast and then on May 25 in a Class 6 in Brisbane over 1350m.
The Gai Waterhouse Classic is her first stakes assignment but based on her recent runs, nice barrier six draw and 54kg light weight the bookies are tipping her to handle the step up in class paying $3.50 for her to win.
There are then three other single-figure fancies in the Gai Waterhouse Classic betting markets with:
- #3 Classics ($5.50) – Should get a lovely run from barrier one with Larry Cassidy aboard, Peter Snowden’s well-bred Commands mare runs second-up for the season after a close fifth to stablemate Detours in a Listed race under similar conditions at Eagle Farm from June 1, should improve on that getting up a bit in distance
- #2 Bound To Blush ($6 – Chris Munce rides this John O’Shea-trained Strategic four-year-old from gate five, was seventh in the same race Classics comes via (the Bright Shadow Handicap) but before that over the 1350m at Doomben caught the eye when second in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes, really good form in these sort of races
- #16 Love For Ransom ($9) – Out to improve on their last start ninth over 1200m at Doomben on May 25, that was first-up and should be better for the run, also had gate 14 of 14 there and 57kg, get gate nine on Saturday and drop right back to 54kg which gives them a nice advantage
Other notable hopes in the fillies’ and mares’ winter feature at longer odds include Bright Shadow Handicap runner-up Sharnee Rose ($11) who has drawn awkwardly with the second widest gate, the Russell Cameron-trained Victorian raider Ametsis ($11) coming off a last start victory over the 1350m at Doomben late last month, and Bjorn Baker’s Bel Esprit four-year-old City Of Song ($15) who was fourth in the Bright Shadow and before that fourth in the Dark Jewel Classic at Scone the form of which has been holding up.
