Capacity Ipswich Cup Field 2013 Released

A full field of 16 starters plus a handful of emergencies have been accepted to contest this Saturday’s headline race, the 2013 Ipswich Cup, due to run in Queensland as one of three black type races at the Ipswich Racecourse feature meet.

Due to jump at 3:05pm (AEST) as Ipswich Race 7 the $200,000 Listed Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m) has attracted one of its classiest fields to date with the acceptances led by Peter Moody’s in-form import Voila Ici.

Set to lump around the hefty 60kg topweight, Voila Ici has also suffered a wide Ipswich Cup barrier draw with gate 19, coming into 15 of 16 if all four emergencies fail to gain a run.

The Daylami eight-year-old improved on their recent poor performances last start when beaten under a length finishing an eye-catching third to Quintessential in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m), an effort Moody is looking for them to repeat as they go over a similar distance this weekend.

The galloper is after their first win down under, Voila Ici not having won a race since the Group 1 Gran Premio Di Milano (2412m) in Italy back in June of 2011.

Following the highly-rated Voila Ici in the Ipswich Cup field and weights are then the Graeme Boyd-trained Kiwi raider Ginga Dude (58.5kg) and Leon CorstensZabeelionaire (57kg).

Zabeelionaire has drawn nicely in gate six, into three with emergencies out, and while the four-year-old Zabeel’s recent form has left a lot to be desired they do have class having won the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) in May last year.

Another Group cup winner after the Ipswich Cup 2013 trophy is then the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Rialya (55kg) in gate 12 with Jim Byrne to ride.

The Kempinsky five-year-old was last seen finishing seventh to Precedence in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) and hasn’t won a race since their narrow victory in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup over the two miles at Morphettville in March last year.

While these are the rank horses in the mix there are a few lesser known runners coming off some very good form ready to challenge at nice light weights including the Tony Gollan-trained Bang On who will be after their third straight win.

A nicely bred Not A Single Doubt mare, five-year-old Bang On has won successive Toowoomba races including the coveted Toowoomba Cup (2100m) on June 2 but has to overcome the extreme outside barrier on Saturday to also secure the Ipswich Cup.

She does however get in on the 54kg minimum, which is the same weight she carried last start.

Gollan has also accepted for Topping (barrier 13) who will be ridden by Larry Cassidy as they look to improve on their fourth to their stablemate in the Ipswich Cup.

Toowoomba Cup runner-up Dodging Eddie meanwhile failed to secure a start in the top 16 and is sweating on a number of scratchings as the third emergency.

Other notable Ipswich Cup hopes then include Muirfield out to give Victorian trainer Michael Moroney their second straight win in the race following the success of Shenzhou Steeds 12 months ago, New Zealand-trained High Chaparral mare High Kin, Brian Smith’s veteran Magic Albert gelding Za Magic and the Gerald Ryan-trained Planetarium.

Last start Eagle Farm winner Planetarium has come up trumps with barrier one and will be ridden by Brenton Avdulla as they face their first serious class rise on the weekend.

They are also the only other last start winner in the mix along with Bang On.
