Despite original intentions to send his multiple Group 1 winning mare Streama off to the paddock after her run in the Stradbroke Handicap, the way she performed and subsequently pulled up after Queensland’s richest race has trainer Guy Walter considering running her again Saturday week in the 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara.
The always honest Stratum four-year-old, winner of the 2011 Flight Stakes and 2012 Australian Oaks, was an eye catching third when beaten only a length by the last-to-first winner Linton in the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on the weekend.
It was a nice effort from the $1.57 million earner and having pulled through the run bright as a button, Streama could be given another shot at becoming a triple Group 1 winner in the $500,000 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 22.
“We have to consider whether she might not be sharp enough for another 1400 metre race,” he said.
“We thought we would have one go at the end of her campaign in the Stradbroke but she has pulled up extremely well so we have to think about giving her another try.”
If Walter does decide to back Streama up in the Tattersall’s Tiara the Warwick Farm-based trainer will be launching a strong double-pronged assault on the final Group 1 of the season having also confirmed Skyerush for the event.
“Skyerush definitely runs,” he said.
Super Jet seven-year-old Skyerush hasn’t raced since her Group 2 Emancipation Stakes victory over the Randwick mile on April 27 which was her third win from four starts during the autumn.
The Tattersall’s Tiara has always been the target for her this preparation and after a pleasing track gallop on Monday morning at Randwick with Blake Shinn in the saddle Skyerush has further confirmed her acceptance in the feature which she finished a very close second to Pear Tart in 12 months ago.
“She is in fantastic shape and couldn’t be going any better,” Shinn said.
“She likes wet tracks which she could get in Brisbane and if ever a horse deserved a Group One win it’s her.”
Walter agrees and was equally impressed with her efforts on Monday.
“I was happy with the gallop and with her,” he said.
“She is a tough little mare and she has never had an unsound day in all the time I’ve had her.”
