The Kennewell’s are preparing for a big day at Ipswich Racecourse this weekend with Kempinsky five-year-old Rialya nominated for the $200,000 Listed Channel 7 Ipswich Cup (2150m).

Lloyd’s father and fellow trainer Gary Kennewell will then be represented in the $175,000 Listed City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) by Group 1 The Goodwood runner-up Conservatorium.

While Conservatorium, coming off a close second to Galah in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1350m) a fortnight ago, is sure to start one of the top fancies in the Eye Liner – Rialya may have their work cut out for them in the meeting’s marquee race.

This year’s Ipswich Cup drew 25 nominees and among the entries are some truly classy contenders including Peter Moody’s Eagle Farm Cup third placed Voila Ici, Tony Gollan’s Toowoomba Cup winner Bang On, Toowoomba Cup runner-up Dodging Eddie who boasts the home track advantage on Saturday and Barry Lockwood’s in-form five-year-old Tokamak coming off a Listed win over the Eagle Farm mile from last Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap Day.

Despite the imposing list of Ipswich Cup nominees Kenneweell believes Rialya won’t just be there making up numbers.

The horse hasn’t won a race since the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) back home last March, or in fact run better than fifth in their eight subsequent runs since that big two mile victory.

This year they’ve had three runs, the most recent of which was a seventh to Precedence in the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben on May 25.

While on paper seventh doesn’t read well they were beaten only two and a half lengths by the Bart Cummings-trained winner and Kennewell is confident they have improvement in them as he has had them set for the Ipswich Cup from day dot this prep.

“I thought his first run up there was very good and the Ipswich Cup is the race he’s been set for all preparation and I reckon he can win,” he said.
