The Royal Academy five-year-old is one of 28 nominations taken for the $175,000 Listed City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) which runs alongside two other Listed features at Ipswich Racecourse on the weekend.

A consistent galloper, Conservatorium is also an elite level performer having finished only half a length away second to Platelet in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) back home at Morphettville on May 11 after jumping from the extreme outside barrier 16 of 16.

They backed up in Brisbane on June 1 were just nudged out of a win when finishing a mere short half head away second to Galah in the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) before being balloted out of the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1300m) last Saturday.

Connections will now seek a consolation prize in Ipswich’s Eye Liner Stakes with Conservatorium before sending them out for a break.

“He’s going the best he’s gone in a long time,” Lloyd Kennewell, son of Conservatorium’s trainer Gary Kennewell, said of Conservatorium this week.

“His form speaks for itself at the moment … he’s right in the zone.”

This year’s Eye Liner Stakes attracted one of its classiest list of nominations this year too with other top rated chances including former Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready and the former Gillian Heinrich-trained Startsmeup who is now prepared by former Melbourne Cup-winning trainer John Meagher with his sons Daniel and Chris in Brisbane.

Last year’s runner-up Jetset Lad meanwhile is in the mix again this year for John Wheeler having run a close fifth to Ipswich Cup hopeful Tokamak in the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap (1600m) at Eagle Farm last weekend.

Other notable Eye Liner Stakes nominees include the Gerald Ryan-trained Dances On Stars, last start Doomben winning mare Ametsis, the Kelly Schweida-trained Doubtful Jack, Rob Heathcote’s Chief De Beers runner-up Gundy Son, BRC Sprint runner-up Mahisara out to improve on their QTC Cup 12th and the Brian Smith-trained Meet George.
