Missy Longstocking Wins First on Stradbroke Handicap Day 2013

The first race on 2013 Stradbroke Handicap Day went to the locals with promising Queensland-trained filly Missy Longstocking taking out the $100,000 Listed Ambassador Travel Hampden Stakes (1200m) in fine style at Eagle Farm.

Prepared in Brisbane by Liam Birchley the Sequalo two-year-old was the heavily backed market mover for the Hampden Stakes based on her consistent record of five wins from eight starts leading up to today.

A winner of her opening four career starts including the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) in the summer, Missy Longstocking suffered her first defeat when third in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January.

She returned this time in winning the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) second-up at Doomben two back before her ninth to Zoustar in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce (1350m) on May 25.

Relishing a step back in class and distance today it proved a master stroke adding the blinkers to her gear today, although she did over race in the early stages and had little luck just after the jump getting caught three wide.

The short priced favourite Cosmic Endeavour, Gai Waterhouse’s Northern Meteor filly coming off a win on debut at Canterbury, burst through at the 800m to hit the lead.

Miss Longstocking eventually settled in third behind them with the experience and talent of jockey Damien Browne working to get her into a lovely position.

With 200m left to travel Missy Longstocking kicked up on the outside and went to the lead with 100m to go, Browne taking care of her after she did a lot of work early.

She was too strong in the end however, and probably could have led all the way like she was trying to do, eventually hitting the line first ahead of Enquare and Jet Down On It showing off her superiority.

Cosmic Endeavour seemed to hit at about the 100 metres and faded out of contention allowing for the back runners to come through and steal the minor placings.

It was a nice start to the meeting for Browne who has some big rides coming up including on the local champ Buffering in the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and he was thrilled to see Missy Longstocking add some more black type to her record.

“Always good to start Stradbroke Day with a win,” he said.

“She hasn’t had much luck…people are pretty quick to write her off.

“But she’s been the benchmark two-year-old of the season here and it’s good to see her bounce back today.”

While Browne credited the filly her trainer Birchley was quick to credit Browne’s ride.

“Damiens’ the right sort of rider for that (when they over race),” he said.

“He gets them beautifully balanced and relaxed.

“He’s a beautiful rider…just keeps the moment up and obviously gets a lot of results.”

Worth a pretty penny as a broodmare now, Miss Longstocking could return to Eagle Farm in two weeks’ time on Tattersalls’ Tiara Day for a Listed race over 1400m, but her long term goal was an interstate trip in the spring.

“Short term it’s a possibility she may run again in a fortnight over 1400m,” Birchely said.

“I’ll just see how she goes after this but otherwise we’ll head down for the spring.”
