Brisbane Cup 2013 Results – Moriarty Turns Tables on Quintessential

After finishing fourth behind them in the Eagle Farm Cup last Saturday, Stradbroke Handicap Day 2013 saw the improving Moriarty this time get the better of Quintessntial to win the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm.

Capping off a stellar day for likeable Sydney trainer Chris Waller who also celebrated Straddie Day wins with Red Tracer in the Dane Ripper and progressive stayer Hawkspur in the Group 1 Queensland Derby, Clodovil five-year-old Moriarty proved too hard to beat in the last on the program.

Now a winner of nine of their 29 career starts the imported stayer has been racing with Waller since the autumn last year starting to hit their peak in January when winning the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup and Gosford Cup in Sydney.

“He’s been a bit of a revolution in the past six months,” Waller said after the Brisbane Cup win.

They returned this season off a three month spell with two credible fifth place finishes before breaking their Group maiden status down under with a nice Group 3 Lord Mayors Cup victory over the 2000m at Rosehill in May.

Last time out they finished just a length away fourth to last year’s Queensland Oaks winner Quintessential in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m).

With both on the short seven day back-up however it was the Nash Rawiller-ridden Moriarty ($7) who handled it better for the Brisbane Cup winning by a length over the John Sargent-trained mare Quintessential ($6.50) who was denied her third Eagle Farm win on the trot having also won the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2100m) two back at the track.

Finishing off the winner Brisbane Cup trifecta just a long neck further away again was then the Lisa Latta-trained Zennista ($16) who has been enjoying their time in Australia visiting from New Zealand.

There were no excuses for the beaten favourite Quintessential either who got a lovely run throughout just off the pace in fifth.

Morarity meanwhile settled around midfield having gotten away okay from their wide barrier and encountering a bit of traffic approaching the home turn.

Quintessential got into the clear a the right time on the straight as a number began to make their move, but it was Morarity and jockey Nash Rawiller down the outside who out stayed the field hitting the front with just 50 metres left to take first prize.

“This is a great win,” part-owner Neil Werrett, also one of the connections of the mighty Black Caviar, said.

“And what a ride.

“Nash did a great job to get him across.

“He’s got a good speed to him that horse.

“He’s a pretty handy horse old Moriarty.”

Waller was apleased with Moriarty’s performance both cups but was especially happy that they handled the step up to the 2400m without issue opening up plenty of opportunities for the pending spring carnivals.

“Stepping up to 2400 metres was a concern,” Waller admitted.

“But it was a10 out of 10 ride, he burst through a tight gap and ran to the line strongly.”

With Stradbroke Day done and dusted punters will be turning their attention to the final Group 1 meeting of the season with Tattersall’s Tiara Day to take centre stage at Eagle Farm in a fortnight.
