The low chance of rain in Brisbane today has actually come as bad news for some of the emergency runners who have failed to gain a start in the Stradbroke Handicap Day majors due to a low number of early scratchings including the five spares for the Queensland Derby 2013 who have failed to gain a start.
Earlier in the week rain around the sunshine state had people predicting a wet Eagle Farm track for today’s final major Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival meeting.
However the course proper at Eagle Farm was this morning rated a Dead (4) and with only a 50 percent chance of light rain today there is unlikely to be a wet track.
While that may be a good thing for the connections of most, those that prepare the five emergencies for the $500,000 Group 1 Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2400m) were sweating on a withdrawal to get their runners into the three-year-olds classic.
As it stands however the original first 18 acceptors are in going for the trophy and with the emergencies out the official 2013 Queensland Derby barriers are now known.
Current Queensland Derby betting is led by $3.80 shot Survived, John Bary’s flying Kiwi raider after their fifth win from their past six starts with their only Aussie run to date being their second to Hawkspur in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2100m) at Eagle Farm on May 11.
The Zed gelding however has a wide Queensland Derby barrier today drawn to start from gate 14 which has produced just one winner in the race over the past 30 years.
The in-form Hawkspur ($4.20) meanwhile will be after another win over Survived today, Chris Waller’s Purrealist gelding coming off a big two and a half length victory in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Doomben from May 25.
Hawkspur, to be ridden by Hall of Fame hoop Jim Cassidy for the third time on the trot today, had sweet runs from gates two and one respectively for the Rough Habit and Grand Prix.
They are prime for another magic run when they step up to the mile and a half today too starting from gate three.
Other top fancies in the latest Queensland Derby odds are then the progressive Melbourne visitor Rhythm To Spare ($8) and last Saturday’s Queensland Oaks winning filly Gondokoro ($5.50) who is the early market mover for today’s big test up against the boys.
Gondokoro originally drew barrier 14 for the Derby but with the emergencies out she comes in gate 11 which actually produced last year’s winner Brambles.
