2013 Brisbane Cup Field & Barrier Draw Released

This Saturday a bumper field of stayers will bring the Stradbroke Handicap Day racing action to a close with the final race of the card, the Brisbane Cup 2013, attracting a capacity number of runners.

Due to run as Eagle Farm Race 9 at 4:20pm (AEST) the $300,000 Group 2 Croser Brisbane Cup (2400m) features a capacity field of 18 starters plus five emergencies in one of the most exciting line-ups in years.

While the reigning Brisbane Cup winner Lights Of Heaven is not in the mix again this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival their ace Victorian-based trainer Peter Moody will still be represented vying for back-to-back wins with Voila Ici.

The imported Daylami eight-year-old may have had a lovely lead-up run when a close third beaten under a length in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) last Saturday but they have a number of things going against them this weekend including their 59kg top-weight and also a wide barrier 18 draw.

Eagle Farm Cup winner Quintessential meanwhile will vie for the same double Lights Of Heaven achieved 12 months ago when the in-form John Sargent-trained Fast ‘n’ Famous mare backs up Saturday.

The four-year-old is after her third win on the trot having also taken out the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2100m) in the mud at Eagle Farm on May 11, the former New Zealander proving to be a specialist at the track having also won the Queensland Oaks here last year before her second in the Queensland Derby on Stradbroke Day.

Following Voila Ici in the 2013 Brisbane Cup field and weights meanwhile is the Bart Cummings-trained Precedence (58.5kg) who won the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) last start.

Premier’s Cup runner-up Less Is More (53kg) and third placed Zennista (53.5kg) are also both also in the mix this weekend, the two lightweight chances with work to do from wide gates drawn in barriers 19 and 22 respectively.

Along with Precedence and Quintessential there the other last start winner ready to line up in the Brisbane Cup is the Hawkes-trained veteran Zabeel gelding Fiumicino (56kg) drawn ideally in gate two.

Despite being a rising 10-year-old Fiumicino proved they still had what it takes to win when putting three lengths on their rivals to take out the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) on a Heavy (8) Randwick track on May 25.

There’s certainly plenty of depth in the field too with other notable Brisbane Cup hopes including the local Brian Smith-trained Chairman’s Handicap runner-up Rothera (barrier five), last year’s New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Artistic in the far outside gate and Sam Kavanagh’s Monsun gelding Midsummer Sun getting the final assured spot with the No. 18 saddlecloth as they look to improve on their last start 13th in the Premier’s Cup.

“He just got fired up early, got pulling and choked himself down,” Kavanagh said of Midsummer Sun’s last run.

“It’s just one of those things – a total forget.

“He’s got a bridle with a tongue control on now and that’ll help. We’ll ride him a little bit quieter and allow him to settle and hit the line. The horse could not be in better shape.”
