French Stayer Now We Can In Line for 2013 Melbourne Cup

A trip to the 2013 Melbourne Cup is potentially on the cards for French stayer Now We Can after he passed the ballot for Australia’s biggest race with a Group 2 win in France on Sunday.

The four-year-old won the Grand Prix De Chantilly (2400m) after jumping as favourite and is now a step closer to a Melbourne spring campaign.

It was a fighting victory from the son of Martillo who found the lead at the 100m mark and showed toughness to hang on from Hay Landa and Remus De La Tour.

Now We Can is owned by Hong Kong Jockey Club Chief Executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges who has previously hinted at a Melbourne Cup campaign.

“There’s a lot of water still to flow under the bridge but he just might get to Melbourne,” Englebrecht-Bresges told Racing Victoria in April.

“We mated his dam with a son of Anabaa (Martillo) to inject some speed and now we have a horse who can stay but also quicken.

“His temperament is bomb proof and we hope he can keep on improving.”

Finishing seventh in the Grand Prix De Chantilly was Australian-owned entire Only A Pleasure.

Owned by OTI racing, who are prominent buyers of European horses, Only A Pleasure is definitely being set for a Melbourne spring campaign. OTI tweeted before Sunday’s hit-out that the son of Montjeu would need the run.
