Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Kelso Wood’s former star juvenile Sizzling was back in the winners’ stall at Eagle Farm on the weekend taking out the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m), their victory in which has seen them shoot up the Stradbroke Handicap 2013 odds for their grand final this Saturday.
Wood has had the Snitzel colt, winner of last year’s Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day, set for Queensland’s richest race since their brave second in the Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas back in January.
They had a shaky start to their winter carnival campaign however when fifth as the beaten favourite in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) and then well beaten again when sixth to Platinum Kingdom in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben on May 18.
With the addition of blinkers thanks to the request of jockey Chris Munce however Sizzling was able to silence their critics just in time for the $1.36 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) with their smart half length Queensland Guineas victory over Dances On Stars.
Prior to the Guineas Sizzling could be found as long as $14 in the Stradbroke Handicap betting markets.
They have since firmed right in and are one of the five single figure fancies at a quote of $6 with punters expected to get behind them and their jockey for the fairytale Stradbroke Handicap result following Munce’s comeback from throat cancer.
Sizzling is an excellent light-weight chance for the Stradbroke too with just 52kg, and indications on the weekend were that Racing Queensland’s chief handicap Nathan Bourke would not penalise them for the Guineas win.
“I can penalise him, but he was the best-placed horse in that race, so it’s unlikely I will do that,” Bourke said on Sunday.
“I will think about it over the weekend and make a decision but at this stage, I’m inclined to think he won’t get a penalty.”
Pre-field markets are still led by Peter Snowden’s Doomben 10,000 winner Epaulette however with the Commands colt paying $5.
There’s then a logjam of hopes all occupying the second line of betting along with Sizzling joined by fellow Brisbane local Better Than Ready who was third in the BTC Cup and then fifth in the 10,000, and BTC Cup winner Your Song (sixth in the Doomben 10,000) from the Sydney stables of Anthony Cummings on $6.
The final horse under $10 is then $9 shot Buffering, Rob Heathcote’s perennial Group 1 place-getter lining up in their 16th elite level assignment.
Other notable hopes then include the Chris Waller-trained Arinosa ($10), Snowden’s Queensland Guineas fourth placed Lonhro gelding Academus ($12) who is still not assured of a run sitting 21st on the order of entry and Heathcote’s other runner Solzhenitsyn ($12) who won the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) last start.
Stradbroke Handicap betting will be updated again when the final field is released on Wednesday.
