Sir Moments Goes to 2013 JJ Atkins a Winner – The Phoenix Results

Raw gelding Sir Moments rocketed into calculations for next weekend’s Group 1 2013 JJ Atkins (1600m) after scoring his second straight Listed win in The Phoenix (1400m) at Eagle Farm today.

The Steven O’Dea-trained youngster was well backed and justified his $2.80 starting price despite settling a long way back early in the race.

With Michael Cahill aboard, Sir Moments was positioned at the back of the field before being brought to the outside turning for home.

The big, rangy chestnut took some time to wind up but successfully tackled and toppled Gypsy Diamond, leaving his trainer confident he will head into the winter’s biggest two-year-old race as a live chance.

“He’s learnt along the way, he’s got a couple of victories now and I’m looking forward to next week,” O’Dea said.

“He’s naturally really athletic. In all his work he just does it so easy.

“He’s out of a Zabeel mare so he’s got a bit of stamina on his dam side. A bit further and he’ll be better.”

Cahill has been aboard for the son of Choisir’s last three starts and was more than happy to endorse him as a winning chance in the JJ Atkins.

“He really let go in the last 200m and he did enough to say he’s going to be a good chance next week,” Cahill said.

“He’s out of a Zabeel mare, he should just keep going.

“The mile [1600m] shouldn’t pose any problem at all too him. I’d like to see him on a little bit firmer track and hopefully he’ll get that.”
