2013 Queensland Oaks Won by Gondokoro – Eagle Farm Results

Victorian trainer Pat Carey was quick to heap praise on jockey Rhys McLeod after a tactical masterstroke helped staying filly Gondokoro claim Group 1 honours in the 2013 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm today.

After getting a trail midfield behind race favourite Dear Demi, McLeod showed plenty of initiative to press into a more forward position down the inside at the 800m mark.

The move meant Gondokoro, who had been beaten by Dear Demi in two previous meetings this campaign, was in the box seat entering the straight.

The Zabeel filly had plenty in the tank and reeled off a strong finish to convincingly beat home Miss Zenella and Vaquera.

“I thought it was just a perfect ride,” Carey said.

“Rhys was able to get to where he wanted to be in the straight at the right time. He’s a very cool rider and he rode a lovely race.”

Carey is confident the emerging stayer will only improve with time but was hesitant to commit to a spring cups campaign just yet.

“She’s a very strong staying filly. She’ll only improve with time,” Carey said.

“We’re really focused on the autumn with her but we’ll see what Trevor [owner Trevor Delroy] wants to do with her.”

McLeod praised the toughness of Gondokoro but said he was always confident she could win provided she got the right run.

“She’s gutsy,” McLeod said.

“I honestly thought I was on the horse coming into this race and she proved it.”

Dear Demi took a long time to get into the clear and may have paid the price for racing three times in three weeks, eventually finishing out of the placings.
