Wet 2013 Queensland Oaks? How do the Fillies Stack Up?

With heavy rain falling in Brisbane on Thursday and more showers predicted for Friday afternoon, it is more than likely that Saturday’s Group 1 2013 Queensland Oaks (2400m) will be run on a rain-affected track.

The Eagle Farm surface struggles to hold any water and with the Oaks scheduled late in the day as race seven, there is every chance the three-year-old fillies will be fighting it out on choppy ground.

That puts those with a proven record to get through the ground in the box seat heading into the weekend’s major feature race.

But just how do these fillies stack up in the wet? Keep reading for a run down of the entire field’s wet-track credentials.

#1 Dear Demi

Slow: 2:0-0-0 Heavy: 2:1-1-0

Won at Listed level as a two-year-old on heavy and was second in the Australian Oaks on a Heavy 10.

#2 Kazanluk

Slow: 0:0-0-0 Heavy: 0:0-0-0

Yet to start on a wet track.

#3 Soapy Star

Slow: 0:0-0-0 Heavy: 3:2-0-1

Proven in heavy ground. Won two of three and yet to finish worse than third in the sloppy stuff.

#4 Gondokoro

Slow: 3:0-0-1 Heavy: 1:0-0-1

Third in the Australian Oaks suggests no surface is too heavy.

#5 Express Power

Slow: 0:0-0-0 Heavy: 0:0-0-0

Yet to start on a wet track.

#6 Fantisha

Slow: 5:1-1-0 Heavy: 1:0-0-1

Not a swimmer by any means but did win on a Slow 6 at Listed level in April.

#7 Proper Madam

Slow: 1:0-0-0 Heavy: 1:1-0-0

Proper Madam camp believe the more rain the better. Best win of career came on a heavy track at Caulfield last July.

#8 Vaquera

Slow 1:1-0-0 Heavy 0:0-0-0

Limited experience in the wet but only start on Slow resulted in victory.

#9 Antarctic Dream

Slow: 2:0-0-0 Heavy: 1:0:0:0

Best result in the wet was when beaten eight lengths in fourth position. Seems to prefer it dry.

#10 Just As Cosmic

Slow 0:0-0-0 Heavy: 0:0-0-0

Yet to start on a wet track.

#11 Magic In Motion

Slow: 1:0-0-0 Heavy 0:0-0-0

Finished dead last on a slow track on debut. Hasn’t raced on a wet track since.

#12 Zombie Dancer

Slow: 0:-0-0-0 Heavy: 0:0-0-0

Yet to start on a wet track.

#13 Germayne Lass

Slow: 2:0-0-1 Heavy 1:-0-0-0

Best results have come on drier surfaces althought finished third on a Slow 6 in Listed Princess Stakes in April.

#14 Ireland’s Teardrop

Slow: 1:0-0-0 Heavy: 1:0-0-0

Well beaten in two starts on rain-affected surfaces to date.

#15 Miss Zenella

Slow: 0:0-0-0 Heavy: 0:0-0-0

Yet to start on a wet track.

#16 Phantom Caller

Slow: 2:0-0-0 Heavy 2:0-0-1

Has a third on heavy track but far better in the dry. other wet-track starts have been poor.

#17 Porcellanus

Slow: 0:0-0-0 Heavy: 0:0-0-0

Yet to start on a wet track but only had two career outings.

#18 The Last Shower

Slow: 4:0-1-0 Heavy: 0:0-0-0

Stats aren’t flattering but has raced most of her career in NZ where the tracks are far wetter than here. Should be able to handle it.
