Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival continues from Eagle Farm this Saturday and Group 1 action is on offer with 2013 Queensland Oaks Day.
While the Oaks is the obvious highlight, there are some exciting support races including the Group 2 Queensland Guineas and the Group 2 QTC Cup which stand as lead-ups to next weekend’s Stradbroke Handicap.
Some late week rain in Brisbane has dampened the Eagle Farm surface and early predictions suggest that the track is unlikely to be better than a Slow 6.
Keeping that in mind, the form has been done in consideration of a likely wet track. The weather and some tricky form lines make it a difficult program but there’s still eight races which means there must be eight winners.
Race 1 – Listed The Phoenix (1400m)
#5 Choisenegger ($8)
#1 Sir Moments
#2 Chosen Idol
Tough two-year-old race to kick off proceedings. Choisenegger has form behind Magic Millions winner Real Surreal and relished heavy conditions to win by three lengths at the Sunshine Coast last start.
Race 2 – Mitty’s Benchmark 90 Handicap (1818m)
#8 Secret Garden ($4.60)
Another really tricky race. Secret Garden has better wet-track form than most of the other top chances and gets up to her best distance here.
Race 3 – Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m)
#5 Lights Of Heaven ($2.90)
Moody’s pair look to have this race for the taking but sticking with the defending champ Lights Of Heaven to defeat stablemate Manighar. Thrives in Brisbane during the winter and runs well on all tracks.
Race 4 – Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m)
#4 Fire Up Fifi ($2.25)
With some sting out of the ground Fire Up Fifi looks well placed here. Has been running on in three starts this campaign and should appreciate a bit of extra distance here. Deserves her price.
Race 5 – Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m)
#5 Whateverwhenever ($31)
#6 Bound To Blush
Whateverwhenever finished 13th last start but she’s a different proposition in the wet. At the big price, happy to take an each-way punt in a tricky race. She was a Group 3 winner at Caulfield in the spring.
Race 6 – Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m)
#6 Platinum Kingdom ($6)
Platinum Kingdom was a strong winner in the Fred Best Classic and can repeat here. Drawn well in barrier three and loves the wet.
Race 7 – Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m)
#4 Gondokoro ($3.80)
#15 Miss Zenella
Gondokoro went down to Dear Demi in a photo in The Roses but can avenge here. The Roses run was big and looks to have more class than her rivals. Extra distance and wet track helps.
Race 8 – Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m)
#13 Celtic Dancer ($21)
#3 Hot Snitzel
Defending champion Celtic Dancer gets conditions to suit and at $21 may worth an each-way throw at the stumps in a tough race. Swims in the wet and drawn well in barrier six. Distance perfect.
