Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Despite some off-track controversy over whether adding blinkers to their gear is the right move, the Kelso Wood-trained Sizzling has firmed in the 2013 Queensland Guineas odds for Saturday and is now co-favourite in the markets with Peter Snowden’s Sydney raider Academus.
Earlier in the week Group 1 winning Snitzel colt Sizzling opened as the $6 second pick in the bookmaker.com.au markets for the $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) at Eagle Farm with betting led by Snowden’s Gold Coast Guineas winner Academus at $5.
Money has come in for the local hope however despite Sizzling, runner-up in the Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas back in January, having been beaten 2.5 lengths by Academus when a first-up fifth in the Gold Coast Guineas.
Sizzling was also defeated last start in the traditional Guineas lead-up when 4.5 lengths off the winner Platinum Kingdom in the Fred Best Classic over 1350m at Doomben on May 18.
The punters are backing them to bounce back on Saturday however especially with the likelihood of a wet track at the Farm, Sizzling having won both their starts on Heavy ground.
First they smashed it out of the park putting a minimum 4.5 lengths on their rivals first-up in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast last May.
They then saw another Heavy (8) track at Eagle Farm two starts later, a Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) win over Academus on a Good (3) at Doomben in between, when the easy winner beating Academus again this time by nearly two lengths in the Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) last winter.
On the back of that victory Sizzling made it four on the trot with the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) trophy, and while they haven’t been in quite the same form this carnival, there’s still love for them with the wet weather hanging around.
“Everyone’s bagged him but his runs have been enormous,” Wood said.
Sizzling will be wearing blinkers in the Guineas on the weekend on the recommendation of Chris Munce, Wood still not 100 percent sure they need them over the 1400m.
“Personally I don’t think they’ll make a great deal of difference,” Wood said.
“I’ve always been against putting them on him. It’s not going to make him go any faster but it might make him focus a bit better.”
Despite their impressive last start victory over an almost identical field of rivals, odds on Lisa Latta’s Fred Best Classic winning Kiwi raider Platinum Kingdom have eased out from $5.50 to $6.
The Magnus three-year-old has been in flying form since arriving on Aussie shores in April and a wet track will play to their advantage as they easily accounted for their rivals when winning their debut down under in the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) on a Heavy (9) Randwick course.
The other single figure fancies meanwhile have remained steady at their opening prices with Fred Best runner-up Boban ($6), Redoute’s Choice filly Lilliburelero ($8) tipped to improve second-up after her Fred Best fifth on the back of a 20 week break, and another Snowden-trained Stradbroke hope Complicate ($9.50).
Lucky Hussler meanwhile is the only other notable market mover in the Queensland Guineas in from $61 to $41.
While still a long shot hope there’s obviously been a tickle for the Kent Fleming-trained Husson gelding who comes off an eighth in the Fred Best.
