Full Field for 2013 Belmont Sprint

While most of this weekend’s attention will be on Queensland’s winter carnival, there is a high quality race taking place in Perth on Saturday with the Group 3 2013 Belmont Sprint (1400m).

The $125,000 event has attracted a full 16-horse field plus one emergency and includes most of Perth’s big-race regulars.

Roma Cup winner Power Princess is a notable absentee but the horse that nearly beat her gets his chance to go one better.

Ranger, a six-year-old gelding from the yard of Grant Williams, hasn’t won since November 2011 but is considered a talented galloper and nearly produced an upset ofver a less than ideal distance in the Roma Cup.

Also coming out of the Roma Cup and expected to improve with fitness and extra distance on their side are third and fourth placegetters Playing God and Waratah’s Secret.

Playing God has won the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic twice while Waratah’s Secret is a three-time winner at Group level.

Joining Playing God in the field is stablemate God Has Spoken but last year’s Kingston Town Classic third placegetter will have to bounce back from a horror last-place performance in the Roma Cup.

There is not one last-start winner in the field but bringing strong form into the race is Grant Williams-trained mare Moonlight Bay.

The five-year-old hasn’t finished worse than fourth in his past four starts and was most recently seen running second in the Geraldton Cup in April. Joining Ranger and Moonlight Bay as part of a three-pronged Williams attack on the Belmont spring is Dreamaway.

Others contesting this weekend’s Perth feature include Justin Warwick’s six-year-old gelding Global Flirt and Daniel Morton’s pair of Zester and Belora.
