Stradbroke Hope Listen Son In 2013 Spear Chief Handicap Field

Currently dead last in the 2013 Stradbroke Handicap ballot for Saturday week’s $1.36 million showdown, the Tony Gollan-trained Listen Son gets one last chance to earn a shot at the Group 1 when they run in the $80,000 Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) on Queensland Oaks Day this Saturday.

Big Jesse six-year-old Listen Son was one of 40 first acceptors for the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) this week, the sunshine state’s richest race set to light up Eagle Farm on June 8.

Not having won a race since November of 2011 however, Listen Son is serious danger of missing out on a Stradbroke start as they are the lowest-rated of the 40 hopefuls.

If they fail to make the Stradbroke Handicap field it will be the first time in three years they don’t run in the feature having finished sixth to Sincero in 2011 and 13th behind Mid Summer Music last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

This time in the gelding has been firing on all cylinders starting with their good first-up fourth behind Buffering in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m).

They backed up at Doomben on May 18 to run a good third behind Belltone in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m).

Gollan runs them again this Saturday in the Spear Chief Handicap running a risk however as the race doesn’t offer a Stradbroke ballot exemption like two other races on the card – the Queensland Guineas (for three-year-olds only) and the QTC Cup.

Other notable Spear Chief Handicap runners meanwhile include Barry Lockwood’s Tokamak, the John Thompson-trained duo of Hour Of Peril and Prost drawn in gates three and nine respectively, and the Rob Heathcote-trained Fire Up Fifi with the inside alley.

Lovely grey Bradbury’s Luck mare Fire Up Fifi is always thereabouts in these sort of stakes races, the super consistent five-year-old having run a good third in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m) at the Gold Coast two back before her fifth when defeated only one and a half lengths in the BRC Sprint last start.
