The addition of blinkers could be the key to getting Kelso Wood’s Snitzel colt Sizzling back to their best in Saturday’s $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m) ahead of their shot at the following weeks’ 2013 Stradbroke Handicap.
Sizzling thrived during last year’s Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival as a juvenile winning all four of their starts that prep including the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben and the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) in the wet at Eagle Farm.
They also enjoyed their biggest turf triumph to date last June with a narrow victory over Kabayan in the Group 1 T.J. Smith (1600m).
A competitive force during the spring and summer in Melbourne and then back in Queensland, this time in Sizzling has been racing a little below par.
Despite the hype over their return at the Gold Coast on May 4 they colt only managed to finish fifth to Academus in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).
They finished even further back last start when sixth to Platinum Kingdom in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben on May 18.
Wood isn’t giving up on the million dollar earner however and will run Sizzling in the 2013 Queensland Guineas this Saturday hoping for improvement to confirm a start in Saturday week’s $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
Boosting the trainer’s confidence will have been Sizzling nice piece of trackwork at Doomben this morning, the horse thriving with the addition of blinkers to his gear.
“The blinkers made a difference when he jumped and hit the ground running,” their regular trackwork rider Patricia Gesler, who will recommend to Wood they wear them on Saturday, said.
“Without the blinkers he would jump and probably just drop the bit.
“With the blinkers today he jumped and he was concentrating and really switched on.”
Among Sizzling’s major rivals in the Queensland Guineas on the weekend are the winners of their past two starts with the Peter Snowden-trained Academus (Gold Coast Guineas) and Kiwi raider Platinum Kingdom (Fred Best Classic).
As for the Stradbroke Handicap 2013 Sizzling is currently rated a $14 chance in markets led by last weekend’s impressive Doomben 10,000 winner Epaulette ($4.40) who could still defect after their hefty 56kg weight allocation.
