This Saturday at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse Gerald Ryan’s Sydney raider Hot Snitzel will look to secure a Stradbroke Handicap 2013 ballot exemption with a bounce-back win in the $175,000 Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m).
One of two races on Queensland Oaks Day along with the Queensland Guineas offering a ballot free ride into the state’s richest race, the $1.36 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) Saturday week, the 2013 QTC Cup is Snitzel four-year-old Hot Snitzel’s chance to return to form after a failed run at the Gold Coast last start.
Second-up winner of the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day, Hot Snitzel failed to bring that form to the sunshine state on May 4 when they could only manage to finish 13th to Famous Seamus in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m).
Ryan is hoping they can put their winter carnival back on track this weekend however when they return to Eagle Farm for the first time since their impressive three length victory in the Group 2 BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) two years back.
They also put in a nice run at the track seven days after that when second to Benfica in the Group 1 TJ Smith (1600m) as a two-year-old.
Last week the horse kicked out in the barriers before the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben, subsequently won by the Kelso Wood-trained Belltone who is also nominated for the QTC Cup on Saturday, and was withdrawn from the crucial lead-up.
They looked to have come on well since however and Ryan will have his fingers crossed they behave better this weekend.
“Before the BTC Sprint he kicked out and the toe clip of his shoe went into his foot,” Ryan said.
“He is a smart horse but sometimes he does dumb things.
“He galloped well on Wednesday and again on Saturday so hopefully nothing goes wrong this time.”
Nash Rawiller, who also rides favourite Dear Demi in the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at the meeting, has been booked for Hot Snitzel in the QTC Cup.
If they perform well then Ryan also confirmed they would definitely be considered for the seven day back-up going to the Stradbroke Handicap 2013, a race Hot Snitzel is currently paying $51 to win through bookmaker.com.au.
“Nash Rawiller will ride him and if he happened to win then we would seriously look at the Stradbroke,” Ryan said.
