2013 JJ Atkins Assignment for Waller’s BRC Sires Produce Quinella

Sydney’s premier horsemen Chris Waller has two live wire chances in the upcoming JJ Atkins 2013 after his progressive colts Zoustar and Vilanova ran one-two in the $250,000 Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) in Brisbane on Doomben 10,000 Day.

In a finish that very much came down to the horse that had the better run, Northern Meteor two-year-old Zoustar was first over the line in the BRC Sires’ Produce result after surging forward from the inside over the closing stages.

They had a prime position throughout too with jockey Jim Cassidy getting them into the box seat third on the fence.

Commands colt Vilanova was certainly gallant in defeat, the New Zealand expat having been caught three deep throughout and then four deep on the turn for home before charging home for another close second.

In their Australian debut on May 11 they were only a long neck runner-up to Vo Heart in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) and is certainly on the way up.

The John O’Shea-trained Bound For Earth finished off the winning BRC Sires Produce trifecta meanwhile doing well to hang on for third and could also be on track for a Group 1 assignment in the $500,000 JJ Atkins (1600m), formerly known as The TJ Smith, at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day, June 8.

Waller announced post-race that the 2013 JJ Atkins was on the agenda for both Zoustar and Vilanova and while they didn’t win today, the later could be the better positioned of the two going onto the mile.

“It was a good quinella,” Waller said.

“They’ll both go onto the Group 1 TJ in two weeks’ time.

“He’ll (Vilanova will) get his turn they’re both nice colts.

“The other horse (Zoustar) just had that better run.”

Cassidy is certainly confident in the BRC Sires Produce winner heading into the Group 1 saying they would only continue to improve over time.

“He’s a nice colt,” he said.

“He’s been impressive in Sydney and taken the next step today.

“He’s pulled up nice and he’s a nice colt going somewhere…without a doubt.

“He’s a Northern Meteor and just keeps getting better.”
