Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
David Hayes’ 2013 Melbourne Cup-bound import Motivado has opened top of the odds for Saturday’s $100,000 Listed McKell Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick following their impressive last start victory in Adelaide.
The five-year-old Motivator gelding is one of a number of exciting stayers brought over from Europe to be prepared by Hayes for a shot at the world’s richest handicap, the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), at Flemington during the spring.
They have had just the two runs down under showing nice improvement last start when taking out the Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2500m) at Morphettville, the genuine staying getting back up to a suitable distance after running fifth over 1800m in their Australian debut at Caulfield on April 27.
Motivado will now back up looking for another black type victory to help get their rating up leading towards the Melbourne Cup in November racing in Saturday’s WJ McKell Cup.
There are just seven horses left in the McKell Cup field following the early scratching of #7 Winning Glory, the favourite of which is Motivado who pays $3 to win successive races.
It is a wide open affair for the punters however and there are four other single figure chances with:
- #2 Vatuvei ($4.50) – Early market mover from the Melbourne stables of Peter Moody, this Reset four-year-old won the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) during last year’s Cox Plate Carnival so has class when conditions suit, last start fourth in the Lord Mayor’s was credible and can improve
- #6 Strike The Stars ($4.50) – Nice gate three draw for the Anthony Cummings-trained Savabeel gelding who improved on a Doncaster Mile 12th to run third last time out behind Moriarty in the Lord Mayors Cup, also accepted to face their last start conqueror again in Brisbane’s Group 3 Premier’s Cup on Saturday with final decision pending
- #1 Permit ($5.50) – Chris Waller-trained stayer carries the 58kg topweight, fifth in the Lord Mayor’s Cup lat time out, consistent galloper always worth a look in for a place in these class and distance races
- #5 Sky Raider ($7) – Adelaide raider for Tony McEvoy, in good form at Flemignton last start when a close second over 2800m, top work there and drop back to the mile and a half should see them sharp
