Chris Waller’s Brisbane Cup-bound stayer Moriarty will miss the WJ McKell Cup at home in Sydney this Saturday in favour of a run in the 2013 Premier’s Cup on Doomben 10,000 Day in Brisbane.
Waller opted to accept the Clodovil five-year-old for the $125,000 Group 3 The Channel Seven Premier’s Cup (2200m), which is the last on a bumper nine race Doomben card for Saturday, over the Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) believing it made a better lead-up to the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day – June 8.
However Moriarty, last start winner of the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) at Rosehill on May 11, has suffered an early blow for their sunshine state debut coming up with barrier 18 of 21.
The Premier’s Cup attracted a capacity 16 starters plus five emergencies but if all five of those spares fail to gain a run then Moriarty will move into barrier 13 of 16.
They overcame 15 of 15 to win the Lord Mayor’s last time out carrying 58kg and will have not only a comparison gate but similar weight too with 58.5kg in Brisbane which is only half a kilo less than the 59kg topweight Ginga Dude.
Waller will also be represented in the Premier’s Cup by his American-bred four-year-old Studio who has drawn ideally in gate four with Tim Clark to ride as they vie for successive wins after a winning effort over 2200m at the Gold Coast earlier in the month; Nash Rawiller is booked for Moriarty.
Along with Waller’s duo there are three other last start winners accepted for the Premier’s Cup including the Sam Kavanagh-trained Adelaide raider Midsummer Sun (barrier six) who will be ridden by Glen Boss as they vie for their third straight win this time in.
The Monsun gelding’s most recent start was a victory over 2000m at Caulfield carrying 58.5kg, the European import to benefit from the drop right back to 54kg on the weekend.
Some of the other more highly rated stayers in the mix then include the Bart Cummings-trained Zabeel seven-year-old Precedence after their first win since September last year, Lloyd Kennewell’s former Adelaide Cup winner Rialya, the now Gold Coast-based New Zealand Group 2 champ Miss Artistic and Strike The Stars coming off a third to Moriarty in the Lord Mayor’s Cup.
