Doomben 10,000 Field & Barriers 2013 – Your Song Draws 15 of 15

Early favouite to win the 2013 Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane this Saturday, Anthony Cummings’ Sydney raider Your Song has suffered an early blow drawing the extreme outside gate in the Queensland winter classic.

Set to run as Doomben Race 8 at 3:40pm (AEST) this year’s $650,000 Group 1 Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 (1350m) drew 15 final acceptors including six individual Group 1 winners.

The favourite of those is Fastnet Rock colt Your Song, the emphatic five length winner of the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) first up at Eagle Farm earlier in the month.

Your Song’s big winning margin in the BTC Cup has been credited by many to the mud track and there are doubts surrounding their ability to back up on firmer ground this weekend.

Further fuelling their critics is the awkward barrier 15 of 15 barrier Your Song has drawn, the smart three-year-old with work to do from out there.

Second pick in the early Doomben 10,000 odds is then local star Buffering from the stables of Rob Heathcote who has also drawn double digits with gate 14.

Saturday will be the Mossman five-year-olds incredible 15th Group 1 assignment, the consistent middle distance sprinter yet to break their elite level maiden.

“There are the knockers out there who are potting Buffering, he has had 14 goes at Group 1s and he is yet to win one,” Heathcote said.

“But try winning one … they are not easy. He needs things to go his way, but if they do on Saturday he will be a genuine contender.”

Last start Buffering finished a well beaten fourth to Your Song in the BTC Cup, seven lengths separating him from the winner, but Heathcote is confident they can turn the tables so long as it stays dry in Brisbane.

“I am more than happy to go back for a re-match and I’m quite confident we will see the real Buffering stand up,” Heathcote said.

Along with Your Song the other Group 1 winners in this year’s Doomben 10,000 field are then the Ron Leemon-trained Ortorio four-year-old Manawanui who hasn’t won a race since the spring of 2011, John O’Shea’s defending champ Sea Siren, the Stuart Webb-trained Yosei, Chris Waller’s veteran eight-year-old Rangirangdoo who resumed with a credible first-up fifth to All Too Hard in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) back in April and Peter Snowden’s Golden Rose winning colt Epaulette  drawn to win in gate fou.

Other top hopes then include the talented Joe Pride-trained Commands five-year-old Rain Affair drawn ideally in barrier five who has run top four in their four Group 1 assignments this time in including running second in the All Aged and second again last start behind Young Song and the Kelly Schweida-trained local Better Than Ready with the rails run from barrier one as they look to go two better than their BTC Cup third.
