Motivado Continues Melbourne Cup 2013 Lead-Up in Sydney

David Hayes’ talented import Motivado will continue preparations for a shot at the 2013 Melbourne Cup this spring when they race down under for just the third time in Saturday’s $100,000 Listed WJ McKell Cup(2400m) in Sydney.

Hayes opted for the black type feature at Royal Randwick over a Benchmark 95 Handicap at Caulfield this weekend for Motivator gelding’s latest run as Motivado continues to prove their potential for the iconic $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

“You’ve really got to win black-type races to improve your rating for the Melbourne Cup,” Hayes said.

“He’s already a Group 3 winner so if he can add a Listed race, it will put him ahead of a lot of horses (in the Melbourne Cup ballot order).”

The former English-trained five-year-old made their Australian debut for Hayes in late April in Melbourne with a fifth place finish in an 1800m handicap, improving second-up when scoring a nice three quarter length victory over Shiny Buttons in the Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2500m) at Morphettville on May 11.

One of a number of imports being prepared for the Melbourne Cup 2013 by Hayes, Motivado is sitting around $81 in the pre-nomination Melbourne Cup betting markets led by Puissance De Lune.

Among their possible rivals in the WJ McKell Cup meanwhile are the likes of the Chris Waller-trained Permit, Peter Moody’s Reset four-year-old Vatuvei and recent Lord Mayors Cup third placegetter Strike The Stars.

Looking at the competition Hayes is confident of a good showing from Motivado as they look to improve their rating.

“He’s going to run very well and it’s pretty good effort to get there because he only ran in Adelaide ten days ago and he’s up in Sydney two weeks later,” Hayes said.

To get behind Motivado this weekend or looking further ahead to the spring make sure you have an account open with the country’s premier online bookie – bookmaker.com.au – who will reward you as a first-time depositing player with a bonus bet valued up to a juicy $500 this season!
