Moriarty Heads 2013 WJ McKell Cup Nominations

Chris Waller’s Lord Mayors Cup winner Moriarty has been dually nominated across two states this weekend one of their options being the WJ McKell Cup 2013 in Sydney.

Also among the early entries for Brisbane’s $125,000 Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) on Doomben 10,000 Day, the Clodovil five-year-old is one of 15 nominees for the $100,000 Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) at Royal Randwick.

Equal 60kg topweight with Gai Waterhouse’s Epsom Handicap winner Fat Al, Moriarty was last seen enjoying their eighth career success with a smart victory in the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m) from barrier 15 of 15 at Rosehill on May 11.

Waller is now weighing up whether to send them to north for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival or keep them at home for the WJ McKell Cup.

Sydney’s premiership leading trainer Waller has a stranglehold over this year’s WJ McKell Cup nominations with three other entrants including Dansili six-year-old Permit who was fifth behind their stablemate in the Lord Mayors Cup last start.

Waller’s other hopes are then last start winners Studio who won at the Gold Coast on May 4 and Coup Acclaim coming off a narrow Hawkesbury victory from the same day.

The in-form horseman admitted that the 2013 Premier’s Cup in Queensland looked a more attractive, and lucrative, option for Moriarty and Studio and that Permit was likely to be his only runner in the black type Sydney race which Waller is yet to win.

Coup Acclaim meanwhile is earmarked for a run in a Benchmark 95 at Caulfield.

“At the moment Permit will be our only McKell Cup runner,” Waller said.

“Moriarty and Studio are most likely to go to Brisbane and Coup Acclaim to the 2400 metre race at Caulfield.”

Waller is also hoping that the Premier’s Cup can lead to a run in the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) for Moriarty and or Studio on Stradbroke Handicap Day at Eagle Farm on June 8.

Also after back-to-back wins in the WJ McKell is then the David Hayes-trained five-year-old Motivado who scored an impressive three quarter length victory in the Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2500m) in Adelaide earlier this month.

Other notable hopes then include Peter Moody’s Group 2 winning Reset four-year-old Vatuvei, the Tony McEvoy-trained Sky Raider and Lord Mayor’s Cup third placed Strike The Stars.
