Solzhenitsyn Wins 2013 Lord Mayor’s Cup – Stradbroke Next

A class edge combined with a well executed Michael Rodd ride saw Solzhenitsyn add another feature win to his resume in the Group 3 2013 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m).

After jumping from a wide barrier, Rodd showed initiative to drive forward on the short-priced favourite.

At $2.40, Solzhenitsyn was a clear top elect and the only one the punters wanted to beat him was Patinack Farm’s Transporter.

The punters got it right. As they approached the home turn, Michael Cahill took Transporter up to Solzhenitsyn and it was only ever going to be a race in two.

Transporter, coming off a strong third in the Hollindale Stakes, fought hard but never quite got to Solzhenitsyn who held on for a tough win.

The 2012 Toorak Handicap winner now has 12 wins from 30 starts and will get a chance to chase a second Group 1 in next month’s 2013 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

“We’ve won a nice race, we’ll now freshen him up and go on to the Stradbroke,” trainer Robert Heathcote said.

“The old timers, blokes like [racing journalist] Bart Sinclair say you need a good miler to win the Stradbroke and we’ve certainly got that.”

Rodd praised the fight Solzhenitsyn showed and endorsed him as a genuine chance in the $1.36 million Stradbroke.

“He’s just too tough, they don’t get past him,” Rodd said.

“At weight-for-age he’s too good for them…he’s really versatile and we know he’s go the class. I’m looking forward to the Stradbroke.”

Kelly Schweida’s in-form galloper Epic took third-place honours.
