Dear Demi Wins Thrilling The Roses 2013 on way to Queensland Oaks

Group 1 winner Dear Demi survived a late scare from Gondokoro to claim the Group 3 The Roses 2013 (2000m) at Doomben today.

With Luke Nolen calling the shots, Dear Demi wasn’t exactly comfortable in the run after jumping from a wide barrier but her class shone through.

Approaching the home turn Nolen pulled the Sydney-based filly wide and moved up around the field.

In the straight Dear Demi appeared to have the race in the bag before Pat Carey-trained filly Gondokoro produced a flashing finish through the middle.

The officials called for a photo but it was the more experienced galloper who held on as roughie Vaquera finished off well for third.

It was the second time in two starts Dear Demi has beaten home Gondokoro, with the pair finishing second and third respectively in the Australian Oaks.

There was a protest from the Gondokoro camp over a check that saw her lose ground early in the race but stewards dismissed it, deeming that it wasn’t the fault of Dear Demi.

Both will now push on to the Group 1 2013 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 1.

The ultra-consistent Dear Demi has now won six of 21 starts and placed on another eight occasions.

She is expected to start close to favourite in the Queensland Oaks where she will attempt to add a second Group 1 title to her resume after winning the Crown Oaks in the spring.
