Arctic Flight Wins 2013 Dark Jewel Classic – Anthony Cummings Firing

Four-year-old mare Arctic Flight continued a huge day for Anthony Cummings when winning the Listed 2013 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone today.

Cummings had trained two of the previous five winners and a tough run from Arctic Flight made it three from six.

Peter Robl had the daughter of Flying Spur in the lead a long way from home and she showed plenty of fight to hold off Pipette and Miss Stellabelle.

It was Arctic Flight’s first black-type win but she will get the chance to add plenty more big races to her resume.

Cummings will take the mare to Brisbane where she will eventually get a crack at Group 1 level in the 2013 Tattersall’s Tiara in late June.

“This mare’s really improved in the time she’s been in the stable,” Cummings said.

“There’s a mares’ race over 1350m [in Queensland] that will really suit and then she will go to the Tatt’s Tiara.”

Robl said Arctic Flight still had plenty in the tank despite being in front from early in the race.

“She had very good form leading into the race and she got the right run in front,” Robl said.

“I let them get to me…when I really asked she found that half a length and it was enough.”
