2013 Fred Best Classic Won by Platinum Kingdom in Upset – Doomben Results

New Zealand gelding Platinum Kingdom has stolen another Australian black-type race, producing an upset result to win the Group 3 2013 Fred Best Classic (1350m) at Doomben.

In a strong field, the Lisa Latta-trained sprinter jumped as a $13 chance but he proved far too strong in the finish.

With Jonathan Riddell in the saddle the son of Magnus was nearly a length clear of the fast-finishing Boban and Academus as he passed the winning post.

It was the second Australian win from three starts for Platinum Kingdom who won the Listed South Pacific Classic at Randwick in April.

Latta was understandably thrilled with the result, praising the effort of her charge.

“He tries his heart out every time,” Latta said.

“He was always coming to Brisbane…he thrived in Sydney and he’s done even better here.

“He’s just thriving.”

The win opens up plenty of possibilities for the New Zealand sprinter who now has nine wins nine from 17 starts.

One  possible option is the Group 2 2013 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm on June 1.

Local colt Sizzling was expected to bounce back from a poor first-up performance but he never looked like troubling the leaders, finishing four lengths off the winner in sixth position.

Many of these will head to better races so it’s worth following the form. Great odds will be found throughout the carnival at bookmaker.com.au, a fully Australian-owned bookie and home of the $500 bonus bet offer!
