2013 Doomben Cup Won by Beaten Up – Chris Waller Quinella

Chris Waller’s classy imports Beaten Up and Foreteller made it a one-two finish for the leading Sydney trainer in the Group 1 2013 Doomben Cup (2000m) today.

Beaten Up was running fourth-up on the back of some solid results and in a testament to Waller’s training ability, he peaked when it counted.

Classy grey gelding Manighar led into the straight and at one stage looked as if he would storm away for an easy win.

But the triple Group 1 winner faded slightly and Beaten Up capitalised, with Leith Innes letting him loose from the middle of the field and he quickly gobbled up the leaders to claim a one-length win from Foreteller and Secret Admirer.

Waller only committed to a Doomben Cup start with Beaten Up following a favourable barrier one draw earlier in the week. The top Sydney trainer was clearly delighted and praised the patient ride of New Zealand jockey Leith Innes.

“It was only a final decision made on Wednesday when he got a good barrier draw,” Waller said.

“He always showed potential but he sort of lost his way a little bit in the UK.

“Full credit to Leith Inness. He was nice and patient and got him to settle…he’s a world class rider, it’s good to have him aboard and he could measure up in Australian if he came over here.”

Waller said Beaten Up will now head to the paddock before a spring campaign where he is hopeful he can repeat today’s Group 1 success.

Innes said the import gave him a great feel and always knew he was going to be tough to beat when turning for home.

“To his credit I just let him slip through his gears and turning for home I was always confident he was going to win,” he said.

It has been a tremendous campaign by runner-up Foreteller who has been racing since February and added a Group 1 placing to his Group 1 Ranvet Stakes win in March.
