Exciting Brisbane filly Missy Longstocking is likely to back up in Saturday’s Group 2 2013 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) after a fighting win in the 2013 Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Doomben today.
The Liam Birchley-trained youngster was sent out a $1.70 favourite and despite giving punters a fright in the straight, she rallied late to score a narrow win from Hallside Rose and Enquare.
Rather than risk getting trapped between runners, the experienced hoop opted to find a position wide with cover.
At the top of the straight Missy Longstocking began to wind up and just as she looked as if she would score an easy win, Hallside Rose began to fight back.
The pair were in a serious tussle before the favourite fought back and went on to claim her sixth win in just her eighth career start.
Trainer Liam Birchely said provided his charge pulls up well she will take on the males in next weekend’s BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Browne admitted Missy Longstocking would need a “soft run” to find the extra distance but is confident her will to win will make her a major player.
“She’s going to have to have a pretty soft run to get that sort of trip but she’s all heart and that’s a big thing,” Browne said.
“Today she relaxed beautifully and gave me a lovely ride.”
In the male two-year-old race , the 2013 Dalrello Stakes, big gelding Sir Moments scored a convincing win as favourite for Eagle Farm trainer Steven O’Dea.
