Spring Plans for Scott’s Speedy 2013 Scone Cup Winner

Colin Scott’s smart Victorian stayer Speediness will be aimed at the Sydney and Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival riches later in the year after a well-earned break following their gutsy win in the Scone Cup 2013 this afternoon.

The five-year-old Testa Rossa gelding posted their second win from their past three starts taking out the always popular $200,000 Listed Scone Cup (1600m) by a half head over early fancy Mouro with Greg Bennett’s local representative Kaypers a further half length away in third.

After taking out the Listed Pink Ribbon Cup (1400m) at Caulfield in April Speediness was last seen running third to Adelaide raider Mouro in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) at Hawkesbury but was able to turn the tables on them in the Scone Cup result.

Rowley Mile winner Mouro went out as one of the top fancies in Scone Cup betting today and made up ground in the final 300m, thrusting on the line to cause a photo finish with Speediness who had hit the front with about 130m left to travel.

But Speediness was able to hold on for the victory on the inside thanks to a beautiful ride from Christian Reith who got the horse in the right position despite them over racing early out three wide without cover.

It was a magic result for local horseman Bennett behind third placed Cape Cross gelding Kaypers too who snuck into the race as the first emergency.

Bennett also said he would be taking some credit for the Scone Cup winner Speediness who recently spent some time in his stables, the winning trainer Scott saying post-win that Bennett was a great friend and that you “wouldn’t meet a nicer bloke.”

“It was a great job by the horse and a great ride,” Scott said.

“With the blinkers on he generally switches on.

“He overraced a bit but Christian got him back.

“He’s a very, very good horse.

“When he does everything right he’s right up there.

“He’s been a godsend to me this horse, he takes a lot of work but it’s what you’re in this industry for, a horse like this.

“The horse likes it here.

“I just love it here (too) to be honest.”

Scott, atoning for his close second in the Scone 3YO Guineas two years when Speediness ran second to Sincero, also said the horse would “definitely not” be heading north for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival having shown all the signs of coming to the end of their prep.

Instead they would be turned out to the paddock and bought back from a spring preparation targeting some of the bigger staying races.

“Definitely not, he’s just about had enough this horse,” he said.

“He was pretty agitated pre-race so he’ll go to the paddock now.

“We’ll have a crack at the spring.

“I’ve got a few little tricks up my sleeve to have him come back for the spring.

“I think he’ll run 2000 metres but we’ll just see how he pulls up and then we’ll map out where we’re going.”
