Spruik filly Missy Longstocking appears well poised to return to the winner’s circle this weekend when she starts as favourite in the Listed 2013 Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Doomben.
But don’t be expecting to get a decent price about the Liam Birchley-trained sprinter.
Missy Longstocking is currently a $1.70 top elect in the Lancaster Stakes market and probably deserves her short-priced favouritism.
The daughter of Sequalo tried hard from a wide barrier to finish fourth first-up in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic and has received a far more favourable barrier seven this weekend.
In her debut campaign the exciting filly announced herself as one of the state’s most promising horses.
Missy Longstocking went through the first four starts of her career unbeaten before trailing home Real Surreal and Sweet Idea to run third in the Magic Millions Classic.
At the time there were some doubts over the strength of the Magic Millions but Sweet Idea put those to bed when heading south to win the Silver Slipper and run third in the Golden Slipper.
Missy Longstocking’s rivals this weekend include Sydney filly Mesmereyser ($3.30) and local hope Vienna Queen ($6).
Mesmereyser, from Gerald Ryan’s Rosehill stable, is having just her second start after running fourth on debut earlier this month while Vienna Queen is yet to miss a place from three career starts.
The Tony Gollan-trained filly debuted with a runner-up finish at Doomben last October before returning in April to record a win and a third-place finish.
Other Lancaster Stakes chances include Patinack Farm’s Little Miss Smiley ($12) and last-start Eagle Farm winner Navelina ($14).
