Spring Dreams on the Line for Speediness in Scone Cup 2013

Colin Scott’s progressive galloper Speediness could set themselves up for their first genuine spring carnival campaign later in the year should they run well in tomorrow’s 2013 Scone Cup.

The Testa Rossa five-year-old takes on a descent field of middle distance runners in the $200,000 Listed Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m) on Friday, Speediness drawn in barrier 10 of 20 but coming into eight of 16 if the four emergencies fail to gain a start.

Two starts back the gelding posted their fifth career win when taking out the Listed Pink Ribbon Cup (1400m) at Caulfield before they backed up to run a credible third to Mouro and Beaten Up, who is a 2013 Doomben Cup runner this Saturday, in the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m).

They get the chance to turn the table on Mouro here too as the Tony McEvoy-trained Adelaide raider is also accepted to back up in the Scone Cup.

Current Scone Cup betting has Mouro installed as the early favourite while punters can find Speediness inside the top half of the markets paying just over double figures.

Last year Speediness embarked on a three start spring preparation but connections pulled the pin after they beat home just one other runner in the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) in early October.

Scott is hopeful that they can earn another shot at the spring riches however with a big Scone Cup performance.

To help get them there their trainer has made a number of changes to their gear.

“We’ve tinkered with a bit of different gear and I’ve put a one-eyed blinker on him to try and stop him hanging in,” Scott said.

“He did it badly last time at Hawkesbury (in the Rowley Mile).

“We worked him at Scone with the new gear and he worked brilliantly, so it’s all systems go.”

Win or lose Speediness won’t be targeting the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival after Scone, Scott instead to send them out to prepare for the spring.

“I’m just going to try something different this time and not even think about Brisbane with the aim of trying to get him through a spring campaign,” Scott said.

“Something has always gone wrong before.”
