A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Last start Rowley Mile champion Mouro has opened top of the odds to win another New South Wales country feature this Friday with the four-year-old heading the Scone Cup 2013 betting.
Tony McEvoy’s Adelaide-based Grand Slam four-year-old is one of a full field of runners engaged for this year’s $200,000 Listed Scone Cup (1600m) which is due to run as Race 7 at 4:02pm (AEST) tomorrow.
Drawn in gate 11 with Glyn Schofield to ride Mouro will come into barrier nine if the four emergencies fail to gain a run in the lucrative classic.
A winner of four of their eight starts so far Mouro has finished outside the money just once before and is tipped to continue their good form over the mile in the Scone Cup as the early $5.50 favourite at bookmaker.com.au.
From five starts over the 1600m the French import has enjoyed two wins, including a three length effort at home last November, and three second place finishes.
They were last seen narrowly holding off Chris Waller’s 2013 Doomben Cup hope Beaten Up to win the Listed Rowley Mile (1600m) on May 4 and must handle a two kilo weight increase going up to 56kg on Friday as they vie for back-to-back wins.
Just two of Mouro’s rivals are also under double figures in the latest Scone Cup odds with the Gai Waterhouse-trained 61kg topweight Fat Al ($7.50) and Raspberries ($8) from the Peter Snowden stables.
Drawn ideally in barrier two with Nash Rawiller booked for the ride, al Maher four-year-old Fat Al certainly has a big weight to overcome, the reigning Epsom Handicap winner out to return to form after finishing 12th in their three most recent runs.
They were last seen resuming off a five month break when beaten 6.5 lengths by Rarefied in the Listed Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 27 and while they will get a better run here after drawing gate 12 of 15 then, they go up from 59.5kg to 61kg.
Lonhro mare Raspberries meanwhile is also looking to improve on her most recent start with the five-year-old coming off a seventh to Skyerush in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m) at Randwick a few weeks back.
Other hopefuls at more generous odds with genuine claims for an upset Scone Cup result then include spring carnival hope Speediness ($10), John Sargent’s Exceed And Excel mare Cathay Lady ($11) coming off a good Emancipation Stakes third, Waller’s seven-year-old gelding Firebolt ($12), the Peter Moody-trained Emancipation runner-up Floria ($12) and last start Wagga Wagga Gold Cup winner Scream Machine ($13).
