Mornington trainer Matt Laurie has backflipped on plans to send South Australian Derby winner Escado to the paddock and has instead accepted with the young stayer in Saturday’s 2013 Andrew Ramsden Stakes (3200m) at Flemington.
Laurie said the way the three-year-old had come through the race made pressing on to this weekend an easy decision.
“We do believe he’s a nice staying horse in the making and he can run in this race then go for a break,” he told Racing Network.
“He’s fit and well so why not have a go.”
The son of Casino Prince was a surprise winner in the Derby on May 4 which came on the back of a runner-up finish in a benchmark 72 at Geelong.
He lines up to take on the older gallopers in a 19-horse field but has to overcome an early obstacle of a wide barrier 17 draw.
Laurie describes his charge as a “natural stayer” and is hopeful he can feature in some strong long-distance races during the spring.
Escado will carry 57kg, three kilograms less than topweight King Diamond.
King Diamond is a dual black-type winner but will have to turn around his form, with his most recent outing seeing him beaten 9 1/2 lengths in the Warrnambool Cup.
One of the better chances in Saturday’s staying test appears to be Thubiaan from the stable of Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller.
After several narrow misses the five-year-old scored the first win of his campaign last start over 2800m at Flemington.
The former British galloper is a genuine stayer and has won six of 20 starts.
Others in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes field include Aaron Purcell’s German import Val Mondo and consisten Saab Hasan-trained stayer Compound.
