Power Princess Included in 2013 Roma Cup Field – Perth Racing

Talented sprinting mare Power Princess heads a small but quality field for Saturday’s Group 3 2013 Roma Cup at Perth’s Belmont Racecourse.

The six-year-old is resuming after an outstanding summer campaign that saw her win two of three starts and finish second to Barakey in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes.

It is the Simon Miller-trained mare’s second attempt at the race after finishing second in 2011.

Just nine horses will contest the race but the field includes plenty of Perth’s big-race regulars such as Waratah’s Secret and Neville Parnham’s pair Playing God and God Has Spoken.

None of the trio were at their absolute best during the summer but God Has Spoken managed to steal third behind Luckygray in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic.

Also in the field is Group 2 winner Ranger who will be out to break an 18-month drought. The Grant Williams-trained gelding hasn’t saluted since the Lee Steere Stakes in November 2011.

Like most of the field, the six-year-old is running first-up but won a trial at Belmont last week.

Williams isn’t sure whether the distance will be long enough but is hopeful he can return to the winner’s circle soon.

“I would be a bit wary about the 1200m for him,” Williams told the West Australian.

“He gets back in his races and it’s not really his go. There are a couple of races coming up that will be more to his liking.”

One horse already up and running and in form is Bunbury-based gelding Kerrific who won the Listed Grandstand Cup at Ascot at his most recent outing.
