It wasn’t the first-choice race for Solzhenitsyn but the Robert Heathcote-trained gelding tops nominations for Saturday’s Group 1 2013 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) at Doomben.
The Group 1 winner was originally being aimed at Saturday’s Doomben Cup (2000m) but a blunder saw Heathcote miss the deadlines for first acceptances.
But it may well be a blessing in disguise as many experts believe the six-year-old is a better sprinter-miler and his campaign is now focused on the $1.36 million Stradbroke Handicap.
There is no shortage of quality in the Lord Mayor’s Cup nominations and among those entered to take on Solzhenitsyn include Chris Waller-trained veterans Danleigh and Rangirangdoo.
Triple Group 1 winner Danleigh may be nine but continues to show he is still up to racing, finishing a solid sixth in the Hollindale Stakes at his last start.
Rangirangdoo is the final campaign of his career and was last seen running fifth in the All Aged Stakes.
One horse nominated in tremendous form is Patinack-owned gelding Transporter.
The son of Commands has won two of his past four starts and was just half a length behind Doomben Cup favourite Lights Of Heaven when third in the Hollindale Stakes.
Joining Solzhenitsyn from Robert Heathcote’s stable is Fire Up Fifi who is a consistent performer with nine wins and seven placings from 25 starts.
The grey mare is stepping up to her ideal distance after running home well for this in the Prime Minister’s Cup at the Gold Coast last Saturday week.
Other horses nominated for the Lord Mayor’s Cup include New Zealand mare Zennista and in-form local Epic who is chasing a fourth straight win.
