Fat Al Tops 2013 Scone Cup Nominations

Scone’s bumper two-day carnival kicks off on Friday and the major highlight on day one is of course the Listed $200,000 2013 Scone Cup (1600m).

Heading a group of 32 horses nominated for the race is Fat Al from the stable of high profile Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse.

The four-year-old gelding has won six of 13 starts including the Group 1 Epsom Handicap last October.

But to taste success on Saturday he will have to turn around his form, beginning where he left on late in the spring.

Fat Al ended his spring campaign with 12th-place finishes in Melbourne and Perth and opened up his autumn-winter campaign with a disappointing 6 1/2 length 12th in the Hall Mark Stakes.

Chris Waller has been stealing racing headlines of late and the in-form Sydney premiership trainer has entered four of his charges.

Heading his team is British import Beaten Up who was second in the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury.

Other Waller-trained gallopers nominated are Firebolt, Say No More and Illo.

Darley-owned mare Raspberries won this race last year and the daughter of Lonhro has been entered to defend her title.

Out to record back-to-back “cup” victories will be Scream Machine who won the Wagga Wagga Cup in a nail-biting finish earlier this month.

Many of these horses are dual nominated for races at Brisbane on Saturday including in-form gelding Epic.

Wherever he runs, the Kelly Schweida-trained gelding will be chasing a fourth straight win.

Entries for the Scone Cup have come from across the country and Peter Moody has two of his charges nominated with Plucky Belle and Floria.
