Peter Morgan and Craig Widdison’s smart mare Lucky Penny was a dual acceptor across two states for this Saturday but connections have scratched her from Caulfield and she will race in the RA Lee Stakes 2013 at Morphettville.
The lightly raced Keep The Faith four-year-old boasts an ultra-consistent record of four wins from five starts to date including the Listed Laelia Stakes over the Morphettville mile this time last year.
After a failed spring that was cut after just one Melbourne run, Lucky Penny finishing dead last in the Group 3 WW Cockram Stakes in the mud, she was bought back last month.
Not having raced for eight months she caught the eye at Caulfield winning a 1400m mares-only handicap.
Thoughts were to keep her on in Melbourne for the $100,000 Wayne Beauglehole Handicap (1600m) this Saturday where she would have been on the 54kg minimum from barrier nine of 10 and likely to jump at the top of the odds.
However the plan is now to target some more black type with her in Adelaide with Lucky Penny instead taking on the defending champ Linton in the $150,000 Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m).
The RA Lee Stakes field is down to 11 runners following three early withdrawals and Lucky Penny will jump from gate 10 with Darren Gauci to ride.
Her impressive last start win and her previous victory at the track and distance have seen her installed as the second favourite in the RA Lee markets behind the John Sadler-trained Stradbroke Handicap hope Linton (56.5kg) who comes off a win in Adelaide where they carried 62kg.
If all goes well and Lucky Penny continues to progress well this time in then co-trained Morgan said they would be back in Melbourne during the spring targeting the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November.
“It’s going to be a test for her (on Saturday) but it’s time to test her,” Morgan said.
“If we are going to have a spring horse she’s going to have to be competitive on Saturday.”
