2013 Rough Habit Plate Field Headed by Kiwis

New Zealand pair Survived and Usainity head the field for Saturday’s Group 3 2013 Rough Habit Plate (2100m) at Eagle Farm.

Queensland Derby favourite Survived will arrive in Queensland on Thursday ahead of his Australian debut and he brings plenty of form with him.

The John Bary-trained gelding will chase a fifth straight win this weekend after some stunning performances on home soil.

Survived defeated Usainity in the Group 3 Manawatu Classic two starts back and built on that to deliver a 4 1/2 length drubbing in the Group 3 Hawke’s Bay Cup on April 20.

Usainity comes from the stable of experienced New Zealand trainer Murray Baker who been in the racing headlines recently courtesy of superstar colt It’s A Dundeel.

While not in the class of his stablemate, Usainity possesses plenty of talent which he demonstrated on Australian debut to win the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate at Randwick last month.

Both will have to be at the top of their games this weekend, with Survived drawn in barrier 11 and Usainity even wider in barrier 14.

The traditional Queensland Derby lead-up boasts a full 14-horse field plus three emergencies and other key chances include Sydney gallopers Honorious and Hawkspur.

The David Payne-trained Honorius struggled throughout the early autumn but returned to form in the Frank Packer Plate to run second to Usainity.

Hawkspur was sixth in the Frank Packer Plate but the start before was second in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes.

Other horses lining up in the Rough Habit Plate include locals Trakstar and Mishani Stealth and Patinack pair New Spur and Heater.

Last year’s Queensland Derby winner Brambles won the Rough Habit on his way to success in Queensland’s biggest three-year-old race.
