Moment Of Change Heads 2013 The Goodwood Field

Peter Moody’s Group 1 spring winner Moment Of Change will wear the No. 1 saddlecloth when they jump favourite in this weekend’s The Goodwood 2013 at Morphettville Racecourse.

The four-year-old Barley A Moment gelding lived up to their potential last prep when finishing off a strong campaign with a solid win over We’re Gonna Rock in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) in September.

They resumed at Flemington in mid-February and ran a very encouraging second behind star stablemate Black Caviar for her 23rd consecutive career win in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m).

Their next run was also a cracker, Moment Of Change crossing just a nose away second to Shamexpress in the Group 1 Newmaket Handicap (1200m).

Something went amiss third-up with the promising galloper however when they ran dead last beaten nine lengths by Pierro when failing to handle the 59kg in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

The bookies are willing to forgive and forget that run however and Moment Of Change will open top of the odds for the $500,000 Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on Saturday.

Due to run as Morphettville Race 7 at 4:05pm (local time) this year’s The Goodwood field drew 18 final acceptors, Moment Of Change drawn to perfection in gate six where they will carry the 58.5kg topweight with Luke Nolen in the saddle.

Moody has also accepted for outside chance Justify That who has drawn awkwardly with gate 16.

Following Moment Of Change in The Goodwood weights is then likely second fancy Platelet (56.5kg) from the Cranbourne stables of Darren Weir.

Also coming up trumps with barrier five, Ben Melham engaged for the ride, the in-form Strategic mare comes off two good runs at the track including her last start victory in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) late last month where she overcame barrier 11 of 12.

A notable omission from The Goodwood acceptances is Robert Sangster Stakes runner-up Angelic Light.

Third placed Yosei however will be out to turn the tables when the three-time Group 1 winner runs second-up from gate nine with Michelle Payne riding her on just 52.5kg, an advantageous four kilo subtraction from her Robert Sangster weight.

Along with Platelet the only other last start winner vying for successive wins in The Goodwood is then the Ricky Maund-trained General Truce drawn nicely with barrier three.

The Brief Truce gelding, also prepared in Cranbourne, will actually be looking to secure their third win on the trot after they backed up from a win down the Flemington straight when taking out the Group 3 DC McKay Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on April 27.

Other notable hopes in the mix then include the Jason McLachlan-trained Queenslander Facile Tigre last seen running second in the Oakleigh Plate in February, the Richard Jolly-trained local four-year-old Karacatis who was second in the DC McKay, the rails-drawn Zedi Knight and the Dennis O’Leary-trained Outlandish Lad.
