Kiwi Heads 2013 Queensland Derby Odds

The trend of New Zealand gallopers dominating Australia’s three-year-old races this year could continue with Survived the early favourite for next month’s Group 1 2013 Queensland Derby (2400m).

After seeing It’s A Dundeel take out Sydney’s three-year-old triple crown, the John Bary-trained Survived has arrived in Brisbane as a $6.50 top elect in the market for Queensland’s biggest three-year-old race.

The Zed gelding will get the chance to press his early claims in Saturday’s Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2100m) where he will chase  a fifth consecutive victory.

Survived has been in sensational form in his home country and his most recent start he won the Group 3 Hawke’s Bay Gold Cup (2200m) by 4 1/2 lengths.

Second favourite in betting is Gai Waterhouse’s emerging stayer Hippopus ($6.50) who was last seen scoring a three-length victory in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m).

It’s A Dundeel has headed back across the Tasman for a well-earned rest but top trainer Murray Baker will still be represented in Brisbane by gun youngster Usainity ($10).

Like Survived, the Kiwi gelding is by Zed and bring strong credentials to the sunshine state.

Usainity was second to Survived in the Group 3 Manawatu Classic in March and has since won on Australian debut in the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate.

Second in the Frank Packer Plate was Sydney colt Honorius who is rated an $11 chance in the Queensland Derby, just ahead of Darren Weir’s gelding Prince Of Penzance ($12).

The top-rated filly in the market is Clarry Conners’ Group 1 winner Dear Demi who will have to back up a week after the Queensland Oaks if she is aimed at Derby success on June 8.

Others featuring towards the top of the early Queensland Derby market include Chris Waller’s Hawkspur and Gunsynd Classic runner-up Lucky Lucky Lucky ($15).
