2013 Chairman’s Handicap Nominations Feature Doomben Cup Hopes

A number of gallopers heading towards a run against Hollindale Stakes winner Lights Of Heaven in Saturday week’s Doomben Cup 2013 will face off at Eagle Farm this Saturday in the BTC Cup Day’s $115,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2100m).

One of the key features of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival the $500,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) runs on May 18 and is the major goal for many of this weekend’s 2013 Chairman’s Handicap nominations.

Of the 25 Chairman’s Handicap nominees the shortest-priced in the latest Doomben Cup odds is Quintessential at $15.

The talented Kiwi mare was a big force during last year’s winter carnival down under winning the Queensland Oaks over the mile and a half before her second to Brambles from the outside barrier (18) when taking on the boys in the Queensland Derby.

She is yet to race in Australia this season but has been in decent form back home including her last start third to Pimms Time in the Group 2 Travis Stakes (2000m) on April 27.

The other shortest-priced hopefuls in the Doomben Cup odds nominated for Saturday’s event are then the Chris Waller-trained Gosford Cup winner Moriarty ($26) last seen running fifth to Scream Machine in the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup, and Victorian stayer Shenzhou Steeds ($51) who hasn’t raced since their dead last finish behind Skyerush in the Doncaster Prelude.

Other notable hopes then include the Ben Currie-trained Toowoomba visitor Margins who won the Listed Tails Stakes (2100m) at Doomben late last month, John Thompson’s five-year-old Hour Of Peril out to improve on their ninth in the Hollindale Stakes when beaten only three lengths, Adelaide galloper Sysmo who was sixth to Kelinni in the JRA Plate in the mud and local veteran Rothera for Brian Smith.

See below for the full 2013 Chairman’s Handicap nominations with the field to be released on Wednesday.
