Gerald Ryan-trained sprinter Dances On Stars has been gelded ahead of his 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival tilt that begins on Saturday in the Group 3 2013 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).
With two wins and four minor placings from 12 career starts, the three-year-old has always shown promise but Ryan said he is a different horse since his gelding operation in January.
“He’s a lot nicer horse, more genuine. He’s going good and I think he will acquit himself well,” Ryan told News Limited.
The son of Snitzel has been a regular visitor to Queensland, producing solid results as a two-year-old to record minor placings in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic, the Champagne Classic and the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
He also returned to run fifth in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate in December before connections and Ryan’s opted to geld him.
Drawn in barrier 12 for Brenton Avdulla, Dances On Stars is rated a $9 chance in the Gold Coast Guineas which is headed by Kelso Wood-trained colt Sizzling.
Last winter’s two-year-old star is being targeted at the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and is a $3 favourite for the Gold Coast Guineas.
The Group 1 winner hasn’t been seen since January when he flew home to grab second in the Magic Millions Guineas despite jumping from a wide barrier.
Wood will keep Sizzling to the state’s three-year-old races before the Stradbroke which includes running in the Queensland Guineas the week before his major goal on June 8.
“I’ve spoken to the handicappers and they assure me he’ll get a run in the Stradbroke and running in the Guineas gives him the same seven-day back-up into the Stradbroke as we used to win the T.J. (Smith) last year,” Wood said.
Other Gold Coast Guineas contenders include Magic Millions Guineas winner Saluter and and Darley’s Academus.
