There’s no denying the quality of Brisbane filly Missy Longstocking but the exciting youngster will be forced to do it the hard way after drawing barrier 17 for the Listed 2013 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) on Saturday.
It is Missy Longstocking’s first trip to the races since January when she finished third behind Real Surreal and Sweet Idea in the Magic Millions Classic.
The impressive daughter of Sequalo started among the top fancies in the Magic Millions after blowing her rivals away to win the first four starts of her career.
Trainer Liam Birchley told AAP that the barrier obviously isn’t ideal but isn’t ready to concede defeat.
“We’ll just go back and ride for luck,” Birchely said.
“If anything, she’s looking to relax now more than ever so we won’t have to strangle her to come from behind.”
Missy Longstocking will be ridden by top Brisbane jockey Damian Browne who has been aboard for four of her five career starts.
Browne is confident his mount has the ability to win from her tricky barrier position.
“She showed in the Magic Millions that she could get back, relax and still hit the line,” Browne said.
Among the main rivals this weekend will be Sydney colt Diamond Oasis who showed strong form at the Sydney autumn carnival.
The John O’Shea-trained son of Lonhro won on debut at Gosford in March before finishing fourth in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes and third in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes.
Also contesting the Ken Russell Memorial Classic are Matt Dunn’s gelding Londehero and local debut winner Skytastic.
